Pupil Parliament
Member of Parliament badge given to all MPs | Our Pupil Parliament |
At Temple Meadow we value Pupil Voice and have a well established Pupil Parliament. Our aim is to for more pupil voice to be heard. We want to hear their opinions, their views and promote discussion on all aspects of school life.
Pupil Voice
How our Parliament works
We have three highly committed Head girls and three Head boys in Year 6.
We have 1 MP per class for Years 1-5 (the Head Boys and Girls count as MPs for Y6). Therefore, we will have a Parliament of 16 pupil representatives. Our Year 1 MPs are elected in the Spring term each year.
Our parliament meet at least once each half-term and will regularly call upon wider pupil ambassadors, ECO committee and other pupil representatives.
To become an MP, children had to initially nominate themselves and create a short speech to share with their year group peers before a vote was held using official ballot papers. The successful MPs were announced in a whole school assembly and in the whole school newsletter.
When a pupil becomes an MP, they need to step down from any existing ambassador roles allowing an opportunity for someone else. Just as in the real world, pupils are aware that their conduct as an MP needs to match the positive behaviour and attitudes you need in this representative role.
Of course, adults will join them and facilitate discussion. The Pupil Parliament is led by Mrs Van Straaten and Miss Dale.
OOur Early Years get to share their views and ideas in a more holistic and age-appropriate way. For example, Head Boys and Head Girls may visit to discuss things with them. Any children accessing the Hub will be represented by their home year group and be fully included.
It is a lovely addition to school life and supports some ways in which Temple Meadow promotes British Values as Temple Meadow values.
Pupil Parliament impact this year
So far this year our Pupil Parliament have:
- open our two new library spaces with local author Giles Trigg
- sought pupil voice to shape our Children in Need fundraising
- sought pupil voice on how to spend a £350 bid to develop wet lunch times
- generated ideas or our Family Engagement Evening treat shop, which will be run by our Head boys and Head girls.
